Adrien Goodard was sitting at his desk going through his finances. Things were in good shape for his company - Goodard Plumbing, but he knew that with the right marketing strategy that his company could be in much better shape. With the right way of going about it, he could grow his company so that his part-time employees could have more hours - increasing his bottom line and theirs. Maybe, he thought, I could even manage to get enough money to take my wife on that trip she's been wanting to go on for years. Adrien decided that creating a website would be a good marketing decision especially with the internet being so front-of-the-line when it came to business practices. He decided to do a quick search online of what web design companies were in his area. When he saw the list of over twenty companies, he felt overwhelmed. How am I ever going to choose the right company from this list. I can't just choose anyone because the website will be the first thing that prospective new clients see about us, he wondered. Just then the phone rang and Adrien took it. He had a customer who had an emergency and needed him and his crew on site immediately. Adrien called his employees and then headed out to his truck. His marketing plans would have to wait.

 

It was late by the time that Adrien had dealt with the emergency and headed home. At the back of his mind he had many thoughts of what he'd like to say to his customers - both current and potential but it didn't sound right to him. He stayed up for a little while pacing the kitchen floor and drinking too much coffee trying to come up with an image in his mind. He felt tired the next morning when he went to work. "We could do that for you, sir," said the man, "for a fee of course."

 

"Have your clients been satisfied with your work so far?" asked Adrien.

 

"Well, sir, we haven't had many clients, sir, but we hope to make the ones we get happy, after all that's how we'll make our business successful."

 

"Thank you," said Adrien, "you're the first company that I have interviewed but I will keep you in mind."

 

After the young man had left, Adrien thought about the conversation that he had. The young man had been personable but Adrien felt anxious about the possibility of him creating the site for the plumbing company. He decided that he needed to know more about choosing the right internet company. It was a different experience than hiring plumbers or choosing companies to supply his tools of the trade. He found a few online texts to give him a better idea of what he was looking for. It made him realize that he needed to keep looking because a new company might not stay in business long enough to keep his website updated and successful for his business. He was also hoping for something that would distinguish him from other plumbers in the area, which meant that a template design was too generic for his needs. Ah, thought Adrien, this is stressful. I didn't realize that I needed to understand so many things about the internet to make the right choice when it comes to having a website. I've been in business fifteen years and have never had one before, but I know that it is important that I keep up with the marketing trends. A lot of potential clients aren't just going to look in the local entrepreneurs' guide. They're going to use search engines to find what they need because they always have their phones close by. I don't have the time to meet with every company on the list. It will take up too much of my time - time that I should be investing in my business. Adrien glanced up at the clock. It was nearing lunchtime and he needed a break. He decided to head out and get something. At the local diner, he ordered a burger, fries and soda.

 

"Hi, Adrien," said the waitress Marie, "you look like something's eating at you."

 

"Just trying to figure out a way to get a website created for my business. I had no idea there were so many webpage designers and companies in the area. I just don't have time to interview them all, and reading reviews and about each one online is equally time consuming."

Adrien made an appointment to meet with Louisa at the end of the week. After the introductions, Louisa made her pitch to Adrien.

 

"I'm impressed. You researched my company," said Adrien.

 

"I've found it to be a necessary part of my job," said Louisa, "I like to be able to make a pitch at my first meeting. It saves us both time. I've come up with a few mock-ups for what I could do for your company. Bear in mind that I can change any colors or fonts that you want to match with what you want."

 

"I like that," said Adrien when he saw a design that had a background that resembled pipes in a colorful pattern."

 

"Plumbing isn't usually considered something fun or interesting, so I thought that we needed to put a fun spin on it. With the information that you can provide me, I can create pages that make your website user-friendly. Because plumbing isn't in a technological field, I find that a simple approach is usually best."

 

"I think that sounds very reasonable," replied Adrien.

 

A few days later, Louisa stopped by the plumbing company to show Adrien what his completed website would look like. He was very impressed and thankful for her assistance.

 

"Now, you just have to advertise that you have a website," said Louisa, "it will help you draw in customers. It is something that you can either do yourself, or you can leave it with my company. Our marketing department can help get the information out there online as well as through the radio and print media like flyers and the newspaper."

 

"Can you outline the costs for that," said Adrien.

 

Louisa did and Adrien found the costs reasonable and retained her firm to do more work for him. He was impressed when a few days later he got a phone call from a new client who had seen his website. His stress level was down and he was sleeping well at night. Publishing a function that doesn't work reliably is potentially worse for the user experience than making no attempt. It depends on the target audience if it's likely to be needed or worth any risks.

 

Page layout

 

Part of the user interface design is affected by the quality of the page layout. For example, a designer may consider whether the site's page layout should remain consistent on different pages when designing the layout. Page pixel width may also be considered vital for aligning objects in the layout design. The most popular fixed-width websites generally have the same set width to match the current most popular browser window, at the current most popular screen resolution, on the current most popular monitor size. Fluid layouts increased in popularity around 2000 as an alternative to HTML-table-based layouts and grid-based design in both page layout design principle and in coding technique, but were very slow to be adopted. This was due to considerations of screen reading devices and varying windows sizes which designers have no control over. Accordingly, a design may be broken down into units (sidebars, content blocks, embedded advertising areas, navigation areas) that are sent to the browser and which will be fitted into the display window by the browser, as best it can. As the browser does recognize the details of the reader's screen (window size, font size relative to window etc.) the browser can make user-specific layout adjustments to fluid layouts, but not fixed-width layouts. Although such a display may often change the relative position of major content units, sidebars may be displaced below body text rather than to the side of it. This is a more flexible display than a hard-coded grid-based layout that doesn't fit the device window. In particular, the relative position of content blocks may change while leaving the content within the block unaffected. This also minimizes the user's need to horizontally scroll the page.

Animation
